LEW WELCH was both my poetic mentor and my first real teacher. But since he was also an alcoholic suicide, it was inevitable that I would have to separate his teaching into negative and positive aspects, the first to be rejected, the second to be accepted with gratitude. Part One of this essay has to do with the first kind of teaching, Part Two with the second.
